Our ‘Strengthening Media in the Age of GenAI’ project is now fully running and we have just opened registration for journalists and representatives of media organisations in Europe to sign up to our in-depth learning and deliberation sessions. We are convening media players of diverse languages and sizes in Europe to share knowledge, deliberate and identify the priorities to help media strengthen their bargaining power vis-a-vis GenAI and protect the integrity and sustainability of the information ecosystem. We already have a great line-up of speakers which we will be announcing in the run up to the sessions.
The focus of both sessions will be on sharing knowledge, deliberating and identifying next steps.
Session 1: 19th March 14:30 to 17:00 CET
Session 2: 20th April 14:30 to 17:00 CET
Through this convening we aim to:
● Mobilise power through convening and tapping into the collective intelligence of the current media ecosystem in Europe
● Strengthen the media community by providing knowledge on potential tools and solutions and pathways forward
● Help media organisations to agree on a roadmap and actions
By June 2026, we hope to have brought together an engaged community and potential coalition, with surfaced needs, and defined potential pathways for public-interest media to protect and leverage their power and data in the AI era.

Our guiding question for this convening process is: 'What are the priority ways forward for smaller and medium size media organisations to gain leveraging power vis-a-vis GenAI and thrive in this changing ecosystem?'
As we argued in our kick off article:
"The developments in generative and General Purpose AI (GPAI) systems have raised concerns about extractive data practices, market concentration by a small number of big tech providers, and pervasive weaknesses in data governance. These have implications for how public interest media, a key cornerstone of our democracies, sustain their content production and protect its integrity. The Data Tank is launching a new project to convene key stakeholders in the media sector to identify strategies — such as data collaboratives, knowledge commons, innovative data licensing or advocacy coalitions — that can leverage the power of small and medium media organisations in Europe vis a vis large GPAI providers. The goal is to ensure that the media not only serve the public better but also derive fair value from their public interest work."
If you are a media organisation or network, an academic or member of a research institution, a representative of a regulatory body, of the private sector, of a civil society organisation, or a person for whom the integrity media matters and are interested in being part of this multidisciplinary convening, please register!
